My Journey to Sobriety & Why I Created This Website

For 40 years, addiction controlled my life. I lived through the highs and the devastating lows, always believing that I could stop “tomorrow.” But tomorrow never came—until one day, I finally hit my breaking point. I had lost so much—relationships, health, and my sense of self. In that moment of clarity, I made the hardest and most important decision of my life: to break free from addiction and start my path to recovery.

From Abandonment to Recovery: My Journey Through Addiction and Healing

I grew up in a household where addiction was the norm, and stability was a distant dream. My father, a hardworking man, was also an alcoholic. As a child, I idolized him—mimicking his every move, even the destructive ones. I remember picking up cigarette butts he left behind, trying to smoke them. One day, I grabbed a container I thought was filled with liquor, only to realize, too late, that it was kerosene. That near-fatal mistake should have been a wake-up call, but it was just the beginning of my struggle.

At six years old, my mother made the painful decision to leave my brother and me with our grandmother while she moved to California, searching for a better life for us. But to me, it felt like abandonment. I felt unloved, lost, and unseen. My relationship with my grandmother was strained—she favored my younger brother, and I sought escape in running away, skipping school, and hopping trains.

I ran away at the age of six and was gone for three days, disconnected from the world around me. That moment of deep confusion marked the start of a lifelong battle with addiction.

The Path to Recovery

Addiction didn’t take over my life overnight—it took root early and grew over years of pain and disconnection. Recovery wasn’t easy, and I won’t sugarcoat it. But it was possible. One day at a time, I began to rebuild. I learned that true healing isn’t just about breaking free from substances; it’s about healing the deeper wounds that fuel the addiction.

From Pain to Purpose

Today, as a Wellness Advocate, I dedicate my life to helping others facing the same battles. I know what it’s like to feel broken, but I also know that recovery is within reach for anyone who believes it’s possible. You are not alone.

Why I Created This Website

Sobriety isn’t just about quitting drugs or alcohol—it’s about rediscovering yourself, rebuilding your life, and embracing wellness in every way. When I began my recovery journey, I realized that many people feel lost and unsure of where to turn. That’s why I created this blog—to share my experiences and provide real, actionable strategies to help others reclaim their lives from addiction.

Strategies for Those Beginning Their Recovery Journey

If you’re just starting your path to sobriety, here are some key steps that helped me:

  • Reach Out to Your Higher Power– Whether through prayer or meditation, finding spiritual strength can be a cornerstone of your recovery.
  • Join Support Groups– Getting involved in Narcotics Anonymous (NA) or Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) can be life-changing. A common recommendation is to attend 90 meetings in 90 days for a strong start.
  • Find a Mentor (Sponsor/Godfather)– Within these fellowships, experienced members often take on mentorship roles to help guide newcomers in their journey.

How to Rebuild Trust with Loved Ones

Recovery isn’t just about healing yourself; it’s also about mending the relationships affected by addiction. Family members may need time to recover from the spiritual, mental, and sometimes physical damage caused by substance abuse.

  • Give them space to heal– Don’t expect immediate understanding or support. Trust takes time to rebuild.
  • Stay committed to your recovery– Actions speak louder than words. Focus on your journey, and in time, they may reach out when they’re ready.
  • Let them take the first step– Instead of demanding forgiveness, allow them to decide when they’re ready to reconnect.

Books & Resources That Influenced My Recovery

If you’re looking for inspiration, these books and resources helped shape my journey:

  • The Bible (for Christians) / The Quran (for Muslims)– Spiritual guidance can fill the emotional void left by addiction.
  • 12-Step Programs (NA or AA Literature)– These provide structured approaches to sobriety and self-improvement.
  • Genius Foods by Dr. Oz– A book that helped me understand the link between nutrition, brain health, and overall well-being.
